Investigation Continues After Omaha Toddler's Death

Arizona authorities are continuing to investigate after a toddler from Omaha died after falling 50-60 feet from a cliff while vacationing with family over the weekend.

Lt. Gerrit Boeck of the Coconino County Sheriff's Department says the 2 1/2 year old fell from the cliff on a trail near the Midgley Bridge Saturday afternoon.

He says rescuers rappelled down the cliff and found the child's body.  Boeck tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB the child's name won't be released until the medical examiner's report is completed.

"Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to release any additional information until we have those reports completed."

Boeck says the Midgley Bridge trail is popular for climbers and hikers.  "The area where it occured was on a foot trail and, unfortunately there are steep cliffs in the area and there is the potential for things to occur like this."

Boeck says they have responded to several search and rescue calls for hikers who become stranded and have accidents.   But he says tragic accidents like this are uncommon.
