Fire Forces Two Dozen Residents From Bellevue Apartment

Residents of a Bellevue apartment building were forced from their homes after fire broke out around 4:00 Tuesday morning.

Bellevue Fire Department Spokesman Jack Syphers says there was smoke and flames as they arrived at the Brent Village Apartments on Galvin Road south of Bellevue University.

"It started in a stairwell and then worked it's way up to the second and third floor and into the attic," Syphers says.  Two residents were treated for smoke inhalation, one at the scene and the other at the hospital.

Syphers says nearly two dozen residents were displaced by the fire and the Red Cross is providing assistance to those who need it.  "Everybody seemed to evacuate ok.  They did several searches and nobody was found inside."

Investigators are now trying to determine what sparked the fire.
