Douglas County Sheriff's officials say a 17-year-old was critically injured Sunday morning when Douglas County deputies returned his fire in an incident near 240th and Pacific.
It happened shortly before 5 a.m. and prompted a Help an Officer call. Investigators received a call of an assault. Deputies responded to an incident in which the suspect was attacking his parents with a baseball bat.
Captain Steve Glandt, with the Douglas County Sheriff's Department says "As deputies were en route the call was upgraded to a possible hostage situation, suspect now armed with a gun of some type."
As deputies arrived on the scene, the teen suspect was outside of the home and armed with a shotgun. "The suspect fired the shotgun at deputies and struck a cruiser and it was more than likely birdshot. A couple pellets hit one of the deputies and two deputies returned fire striking the suspect."
The injured deputy is identified as John McFarland. He was taken to Lakeside Hospital for treatment of his injuries and is expected to make a full recovery. The second deputy, Dale Keen, was not injured.
Captain Gland says the suspect was transported to the hospital in critical condition, but is now listed as stable. Investigators say he will require more than one surgery.
The name of the suspect is not being released because he is a juvenile. His parents were not seriously injured.
