On the steps of the Douglas County Courthouse Wednesday morning, County Attorney Don Kleine announced that he will be seeking re-election next year.
Kleine has held the position of County Attorney since defeating Stu Dornan for the job in the 2006 election. "It's a tremendous responsibility and I'm asking to continue in that service."
He says although he has tried some of the tough, emotional cases, he has no doubt he is doing the job he's meant to do. "There's never been a flicker of doubt. I mean, this has been a job that I love, that I've aspired to do since I was a deputy county attorney after I graduated law school. So, to me, this is an honor."
Some of Kleine's biggest cases have been in the last few years while prosecuting serial killers Anthony Garcia and Nikko Jenkins, both of whom were found guilty.
Through all of the trials and tribulations, Kleine says he wants to continue the strides his department has made with him at the helm. "We've seen progress throughout our term here in cooperation with the US Attorney's Office, with the Omaha Police Department, the Sheriff's Office, the FBI, the DEA. There's plenty of thing we've seen progress on and I'd like to continue that progress."
At this point, no one has filed to run against Kleine for the position.
