Bald Eagle Receives Lifesaving Surgery

A bald eagle continues to recover after receiving lifesaving surgery Friday at the Henry Doorly Zoo.  The bird was found Memorial Day weekend near Syracuse with a severe electrical burn to the top of its head.  The feathers were gone and there was damage to the skin and bone underneath.

With the help of veterinarians at the zoo and a plastic surgeon, a skin graft was done yesterday.  The next ten days will be critical in the eagle's recovery. The eagle cannot be returned to the wild unless this procedure works.

It is still unknown how the bird was injured.
