National Night Out Brings City Leaders To The People

On Tuesday night Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert, Police Chief Todd Schmaderer and Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon hit the streets for National Night Out.

The nationwide event encourages citizens to spend time with their neighbors, get to know civic leaders and interact with police.

Stothert, Bacon and Schmaderer's first stop Tuesday night was at Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha near 22nd and Leavenworth, where Stothert says is always their first stop. "They do so much for the neighborhood, this is what National Night Out is all about. I'm always happy to come by here, this is a good party they put on here."

Ilka Oberst is Principal of nearby Liberty Elementary and she says the event means a lot to the neighborhood. "You can just see, it's great. It's a great chance for neighbors to connect with neighbors."

Oberst says having Mayor Stothert and Congressman Bacon come out to talk with residents of the neighborhood means a lot to the community. "It shows how important something like this is, and how important something like this is to our elected officials."
