On Tuesday, communities around the country will participate in National Night Out as a way to connect residents to their neighbors, law enforcement and emergency responders.
Most communities have citizens gather in one central area such as a park, but the City of La Vista had something else in mind this year.
La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten says they will be putting boots to the pavement and head into neighborhoods throughout the city. "We're going back to the basics. We're having some, what we call, neighborhood roll calls where different people around the city have agreed to host a party in their driveway to encourage their neighbors to get out and interact."
Lausten says by going into the neighborhoods, they'll get to connect with more people. "We'll get to more people that may not have the opportunity to come down there. We wanna hit the neighborhoods, and that's really what National Night is all about, it's neighbors getting familiar with other neighbors."
Not only will adults be able to engage with their neighbors, but Lausten says kids will get to be in on the fun as well. "Officers from all different levels, detectives, motor cops, command staff, will come by and we'll be pulling our special operations trailer and we may have some little goodies in the for some of the kids in the neighborhoods."
Starting at 6:00 Tuesday night, officers will start making their rounds to each of the following neighborhoods, and will spend about 30 minutes at each location.
