Derek and Lindsey Teten of Nebraska City were like any proud parents-to-be when they learned they were expecting late last year.
But they never expected to hit the genetic lottery when they welcomed identical triplets on June 23 at Methodist Women's Hospital in Omaha.
Their doctors say the odds of naturally conceiving identical triplets, with the three babies sharing the same placenta, are one in a million. Lindsey says the thought of three babies never entered their minds.
"I kind of said something to Derek about what if we have twins and he responded by saying that never happens." The next day they learned that they were going to be parents to three babies.
To complicate matters, Lindsey had to have her gall bladder removed during her pregnancy. The babies, Juliet, Adeline and Marian were born at 32 weeks and weighed between three and four pounds.
In the past several months Derek has been renovating their farmhouse so there is more room for their growing family. Doctors say the babies should be able to go home in a week or two.
The Teten triplets are the second set of identical triplets born at Methodist Women Hospital since 2015.
