Semi Driver Walks Away From Dramatic Crash

Two semi truck drivers are being credited for preventing a bad interstate crash in Council Bluffs from becoming far worse Tuesday morning.

Council Bluffs Police Lieutenant Dan Flores says the alert drivers saw a third semi overturn and begin sliding across four lanes of oncoming traffic near the I-80/I-29 split. "From their elevated position, they can see further along the interstate and they saw this semi coming across the median and sliding into the oncoming lanes. They applied their brakes and that caused everyone behind them to slow down."

Flores says the driver lost control of the truck that was fully loaded with meat around 9:00. "The semi crossed the median, struck a concrete barrier, knocked over an electronic sign, came up over the embankment."

The driver of the overturned semi, 43 year old David Raper, walked away from the dramatic crash with minor injuries. He was cited for Failing to Maintain Control.

The crash remains under investigation.
