A Douglas County judge set bond at $2 million for Nemias Garcia-Velasco, who authorities say was behind the wheel during a fiery, fatal crash last week. He faces charges of Motor Vehicle Homicide, DUI, Reckless Driving and No Operators License.
Garcia-Velasco was allegedly speeding in a Dodge work van when he lost control, hit a concrete bridge support, rolled and the van caught fire on the westbound I-80 to northbound I-680 ramp on Wednesday. The crash killed 58 year old Silvano Torres, who police say was riding unrestrained in the back cargo area of the van.
In court Tuesday, prosecutors said Garcia-Velasco had a blood alcohol level of .243 at the time of the crash and was driving the van at speeds of 100 MPH.
They say he is not in the country legally and reports show he has a false citizenship conviction, has been deported twice and has had five voluntary removals from the US.
Prosecutors said Garcia-Velasco is a flight risk and asked for the $2 million bond, which the judge agreed to.
Garcia-Velasco suffered burns in the crash, but has since been treated and released from the hospital. A sixteen year old passenger in the front seat of the van suffered minor injuries.
Garcia-Velasco will appear in court again on August 2nd.
