Autopsy Results Released From In-Custody Death

At a press conference Thursday, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine released autopsy results from the in-custody death of 29 year old Zachary Bearheels.

The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Michelle Elieff, who concluded that Bearheels died from sudden death associated with excited delirium, physical struggle, physical restraint and use of conducted energy device.

Excited delirium symptoms can present as psychomotor agitation, hallucinations, speech and thought disturbances, reduced response to painful stimuli, bizarre and combative behavior, and hyperthermia (elevated body temperature).

The autopsy also showed that Bearheels sustained minor cuts and bruises on his face and head, but Elieff found no evidence of scull fractures or brain bleeds.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer has recommended two officers be terminated do to the use of excessive force during Bearheels' encounter with police. Kleine says any charges that may be filed against the officers involved will come in the next week to ten days.

Bearheels died after an incident with Omaha Police on June 5th outside of the Bucky's on 60th and Center.
