Mayor Wants Shorter Fireworks Season

Due to a growing number of fireworks complaints, Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert is asking the city council to shorten the window for Fourth of July fireworks from ten days to five.

In a letter to the council, Stothert says hundreds of fireworks complaints are called in to 911 every year.

Stothert is asking the council to consider amending the current ordinance and limit the use of fireworks to between noon and 11 p.m.  The current ordinance allows fireworks to be shot off as early as 8:00 a.m. from June 25th to July 4th.

Stothert says the 8:00 a.m. start time would be allowed on the Fourth of July.   In an effort to reduce some of those complaints, Omaha police have begun  a special enforcement to answer calls about fireworks being discharged after 11:00 p.m.
