Insurance Claims Rise After Thursday Storms

If you suffered hail damage in Thursday night's storms, you're not alone. The hail caused more than a little dent or ding here and there.

Jim Camoriano with State Farm says they've had hundreds of claims filed Friday, and they won't be stopping anytime soon. "We expect claim numbers, for us, to be in the thousands by the time this is over."

Camoriano says many roofs were damaged, but that cars took the brunt of it. "We had more than 100 cars that were damaged so badly, they can not be driven."

If you suffered any hail damage, Camoriano says make sure you document it."If you notice damage, it would be good to take photos of the damage. Document as much as you can, this will help speed up the claims process."

Camoriano also warns people to make sure they speak with their agent before agreeing to having a contractor do any work. "Don't pay anything up front, when you're dealing with a contractor. Just don't rush into signing a contract, because you may have some fly-by-nighters that come in. What we have seen is once you rush in and sign a contract, it may be questionable, and sometimes you sign a lot of your rights away."

The best idea, Camoriano says, is to do your research and ask a lot of questions. "If you do get into a conversation with somebody in the repair business, just make sure that they are licensed through the Nebraska Department of Labor. Just ask a lot of questions and do your due diligence."
