Suspect Arrested In Mail Theft Case

An Omaha man is behind bars Tuesday morning after an attempted carjacking, that led to the discovery of stolen property.

Douglas County Sheriff's Office authorities say deputies were called to the area of 48th and Ponca Road around 7:45 for the report of a man going through mailboxes. Deputies learned the suspect, 39 year old Anthony Davis, had wrecked his white sedan in a nearby ditch and was trying take another vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle told deputies that Davis got into his truck through the passenger door and attempted to push him out of the truck. The victim says when Davis couldn't push him out of the vehicle, Davis got onto the victim's lap and tried to push on the gas pedal to elude deputies.

Captain Eric Sellers says Davis then got out of the truck and attempted to flee on foot, but was caught a short distance away. "He got out of that vehicle and ran and then we gave chase on foot, where we caught him nearby and a little struggle ensued and we had to taze him."

Davis' white sedan was located and was found to contain mail belonging to residents of northern Douglas County and the City of Omaha.

Sellers says the Douglas County Sheriff's Office has received multiple reports of possible mail thefts with a vehicle matching the description of Davis' vehicle. "Month and a half to two months, we've been getting calls into the area of a vehicle matching the description of this one."

Davis was booked on one charge of Attempted Robbery, Obstructing and Resisting Arrest.

Investigators will determine the extent of victims and if additional charges should be filed.

Sellers says if you think you were a victim, they will get a hold of you. "We have the names of all the victims here. We'll most likely reach out to each victim, that way they know that we have their mail. That'd be the best thing to do, is just sit back and wait and see if we get a hold of you."
