Mayor's Office Proposes New Annexation Plan For 2017

Mayor Jean Stothert's office is looking at annexing three parts of Douglas County in a proposal put out Tuesday.

The proposal is the smallest annexation plan in recent years and would bring in just over 860 more residents to Omaha.

The three areas proposed for annexation are Lake Cunningham Hills, West Dodge Place, near 180th and West Dodge, and Pacific Springs Village at 168th and Pacific.

Stothert says the three areas will help the city. "The goal of every annexation package is to chose areas that are revenue positive, where we can provide excellent police and fire protection and eliminate islands; neighborhoods that are already surrounded by the city but have not been annexed. This package achieves our goals."

The Mayor's Office says the property valuation of the three areas is $119.5 million and that taxes for property owners would drop by an average of $498 per $100,000 valuation.

Projections show the properties would bring in $6 million in property tax revenue, $3 million in sales tax and $700,000 in street and highway funds over the next ten years.

The proposal will go to the Planning Board on July 5th. The City Council is scheduled to vote on the package August 15th and if approved it would take affect on August 30th.

An open house will be held June 28th at the Saddlebrook Community Center from 5:30 to 6:30 PM.
