Major Storm Downs Trees, Power Lines

Cleanup is underway after a violent storm hit the metro area Friday evening.  The storm rolled in from the northwest packing winds of up to 100 mph, torrential rain and quarter size hail in Washington and Dodge Counties.

The storm hit the Omaha metro area around 7:30 p.m.  Tornado sirens sounded due to strong wind however there were no tornado warnings issued for Douglas County.  The storm raged on for about 45 minutes before the skies started clearing and the storm moved off to the southeast.

Areas hardest hit in the metro area include 23rd and Platteview Road with heavy damage to houses.  There are reports of trees down and building damage at 17th and Fairview Road.  There are numerous reports of other damage to homes, trees blocking roads, downed power lines and flooded streets.  Trees are reported down in Louisville and in Plattsmouth.  The storm also did plenty of damage in Iowa.  There are reports of damage to a mobile home park near Glenwood in Mills County.

There are also reports of overturned semi's on I-80 

At 10 p.m. there were 74,118 OPPD customers without service.  MidAmerican Energy is reporting 7,246 customers are without service in Council Bluffs and the surrounding area.   Those driving should be prepared for flashing traffic lights or none at all.  Drivers should use extra care as there was also a report of a missing manhole cover on Cass Street west of 84th.  

Earlier in the evening the opening ceremonies were canceled for the College World Series but the skies cleared and the fireworks went on as planned.  T.D. Ameritrade Park remained closed to the public.
