Fire Heavily Damages Omaha Apartment Building

No one was injured after a two-alarm fire ripped through an apartment building at the Bristol Square complex Sunday afternoon.

It was reported around 1:00 near 97th and Spencer around 1:00.  Acting Assistant Fire Chief Tim McCaw says the first crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the building.

Due to the heat and the wind, a second alarm was called to bring in extra firefighters. The fire was under control about an hour after the first alarm was called.

McCaw says there were also a number of air conditioners on the roof.  Due to the heavy fire damage on the roof, the weight of the air conditioners caused a portion of the room to collapse.

Investigators say the fire is considered accidental due to an electrical malfunction in the roof area.  A total of 11 occupants were displaced.

McCaw says there is also considerable damage on the first and second floor due largely to smoke and water.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross are assisting displaced residents.  Damage is estimated at $500-thousand.
