The clock is ticking as Creighton University Medical Center officials prepare to close the hospital at 30th and California at 7:00 Friday morning.
The hospital is shutting it's doors after 40 years and will be moved to two different locations. A brand new state-of-the-art trauma center will open at Bergan Mercy Hospital at 75th and Mercy.
It has been renamed the CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy. The trauma center, by drive time, will be the closest to 60% of the households in greater Omaha. In addition, there will be a 52 room intensive care unit and two brand new emergency rooms.
Other new features include expanded surgery suites, an enlarged emergency department with a clinical decision and observation unit, which will allow some patients to avoid hospitalization, and a new four-bay drive-through ambulance garage and adjacent helipad. There will also be a multi-story clinic and academic tower.
Creighton is also opening a new emergency department at 24th and Cuming so residents living near the old hospital will still have a place to go for health care. That facility is part of the Creighton's new University Campus.
Creighton officials say signs will be going up at the entrance near the ER ramp on Friday telling people about the changes. A gate will also be installed and it will be closed when the last patient leaves the hospital.
