If you had plans to float on the Elkhorn River this weekend, you will need to make other plans.
The Papio-Missouri River Natural Resources District announced Friday that all Elkhorn River access sites in Douglas County will remain closed this weekend.
Officials say high waters throughout the season have caused more debris, swifter currents and an increased level of nitrates causing water quality concerns.
The closed access sites include Elkhorn Crossing near 252nd and Bennington, Graske Crossing off West Dodge and the West Maple site.
Papio-Missouri NRD General Manager John Winkler says reopening the river access sites depends on a few factors. "We hope to be able to reopen sometimes next week if the river level drops and water quality is restored."
Winkler says people really want to avoid body contact with the water due to the quality levels. "If you're airboating, and things like that, that will be safe, but if you're planning on tubing or tanking, I would reschedule."
The Elkhorn Crossing campground will remain open, as well as the Platte River Access at Platte River Landing near Highway 64 west of Valley.
