A man is recovering after nearly drowning following a car crash Saturday in Council Bluffs. He's alive thanks to the quick actions of several witnesses who came to his aid.
Police say just before 10:00 p.m. a Pontiac Grand Prix had been eastbound on 80 at the South 24th Street/I-29 northbound exit ramp when it left the roadway and grazed a road sign.
Investigators say the car then re-entered the roadway, veered left, hit a light pole, left the road again and wound up in a flooded ditch on the south side of the exit ramp.
According to investigators, witnesses to the crash were able to get the unconscious driver's head out of the water. Paramedics arrived and transported the man to the hospital for treatment.
Police are thanking the Good Samaritans who came to the victim's aid.
