Man Dead After Armed Standoff

A suspect is dead after a standoff with police near 34th Ave and Grand Avenue Monday morning.

Deputy Chief Elizabeth Davis says a man barricaded himself inside a house around 7:00 Monday morning as Gang Unit and SWAT team members arrived to serve a search warrant.

Davis tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB the officers were heading down the steps into the basement when the man fired 10-12 shots at them from a long gun.  No officers were injured.  They retreated and set up a perimeter.

Over the course of the next several hours Davis says they put a throw phone inside the house, used flash bangs to try to get his attention and utilized bullhorns, but they were never able to make contact with the man.

After sending a camera-equipped robot into the house, police discovered he was dead inside the house around 11:00 a.m.  Davis says none of the officers fired any shots.

Resident living nearby had to be evacuated for their safety.   The investigation continues.
