A Papillion teen who suffered a severe brain injury during a football game in September will get to walk across the graduation stage with his classmates this weekend.
It was something the doctors weren't sure Brandon Steburg would get to do.
Steburg tells WOWT 6 News that doctors said his future was unsure after his injury. “When I was at my lowest point, they told my parents I'm not going to wake up, or if I do wake up I'm not going to be the same person that I was before. My hair is back, and I’m back into things the way I was before.”
It wasn't easy getting back to where he is now though, it took months physical therapy and multiple surgeries, but Brandon says he feels great now. “Knowing that not only can I walk, I can run, I can lift weights. I can go out with my friends. I can do basically whatever I want to do with no repercussions, it's just a great feeling.”
Steburg's mother Carry says it is amazing knowing that Brandon will get to graduate right along side of his friends and classmates. “To have all this on top of it, it's just really great to know that he gets to graduate with his class. We didn't hardly have any hold ups, he was just awesome.”
Although Brandon still can't play contact sports, he's still excited for the next chapter in his life. “If you have a positive mindset, things are going to go as good as they can.”
