Chilling Details Released In Council Bluffs Jail Escape

The man who is accused of escaping from jail, leading police on a pursuit and killing a Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy appeared in court Wednesday morning.

A Pottawattamie County judge ordered that 24 year old Wesley Correa-Carmenaty be held without bond.

The moments before Correa-Carmenaty's escape were laid out in recently released court documents by the case's lead investigator, Special Agent Dan Dawson.

Dawson reported that Correa-Carmenaty was returning to the Pottawattamie County Jail after a May 1st court appearance, where he was sentenced to 45 years in the Iowa Penitentiary.

He says Correa-Carmenaty told a female prisoner in the transport van with him that he was, “going to be getting out (of jail) and they should hang out when he gets out.”

While in the van, Correa-Carmenaty was able to get out of both his handcuffs and leg shackles. Once at the jail, Deputies Mark Burbridge and Pat Morgan opened the back doors of the van and Deputy Morgan took the female prisoner inside the jail.

Dawson says that is when Correa-Carmenaty made his move. He exited the van and “immediately began to physically assault Deputy Burbridge.” Burbridge sustained a number of cuts to his head, neck and arms, but was able to recover and tried to get Correa-Carmenaty by entering the van through a front door. Deputy Morgan assisted Burbridge in attempting to capture Correa-Carmenaty.

During the struggle, Correa-Carmenaty was able to grab one of the deputy's guns, shooting Burbridge in the head and Morgan in the abdomen. Burbridge died from his injuries, Morgan is expected to make a full recovery.

After shooting Burbridge and Morgan, Correa-Carmenaty was able to take the other gun, grab the van keys and extra ammunition before ramming the transport van through the closed sally port door.

Correa-Carmenaty would go on to attempt to carjack a man who was driving near the jail, and shot him as well.

He was successful in carjacking a woman in Council Bluffs, before fleeing to Omaha where he led law enforcement on a pursuit through North Omaha, where he was eventually taken in to custody.
