City Council Candidate Sentenced For Threatening His Mother

An Omaha City Council candidate appeared in court in Plattsmouth Monday, just hours before the city's General Election.

District Three candidate D'Shawn Cunningham was sentenced to fifteen days in jail for threatening his mother in 2016.

Cunningham was granted time served, so he will not spend any additional time behind bars.

The charge came after Cunningham sent a threatening letter to his mother last summer, in which prosecutors say he demanded $200 from her.

The note also included pictures of his mother with cuts across her throat, her eyes gouged and allegedly threatened other members of his family.

Cunningham faces incumbent Chris Jerram in Tuesday's General Election. Jerram received about 67% of the votes in the primary election, with Cunningham receiving about 11%.
