South Omaha Celebrates Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo may be on Friday, but everyone in South Omaha knows the big celebration is Saturday. The jubilant party will fill the streets of South Omaha with music, food joyous revelers.

Event coordinator Marcos Mora says the Saturday festivities kick off with a parade down historic 24th Street at 10:00 AM. "It's on south 24th Street going from D Street to L. This year we're partnering with Nebraska Statehood 150, they're our Grand Marshals, and so we're excited about having them be part of the parade and kicking it off."

Mora says after the parade the party doesn't stop at L Street, and that there's a little bit of something for everyone from L Street to P Street. "We have a kid's section, from there we'll go into our exhibitors, we have a whole block full of exhibitors. Then from there we have a whole block full of food, we've got another stage with live music and entertainment and a whole other beer garden."

Food is always a big hit with everyone, and Mora says the selection will leave your mouth watering. "We like to have a variety, so of course you'll find traditional tacos that will be there, but then at the same time there will be hot dogs and there will be turkey legs. There will be some Puerto Rican food, just all styles of different food, so just a little bit of everything really."

The festivities on Saturday run from 12:00 PM to 10:30 PM.

There are events Friday night starting at 5:00 with the Miss Cinco de Mayo Coronation, live music and a carnival will follow. You can also check out the carnival, exhibitors and even a mariachi mass on Sunday.
