Accused Killer Will Be Taken Back To Iowa

In court Thursday afternoon Wesley Correa-Carmenaty, the man accused of killing Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Burbridge, waived extradition.

Correa-Carmenaty will now be taken back to Council Bluffs for prosecution on a number of charges linked to a Monday morning jail escape and high speed pursuit.

During the incident two deputies were shot, Burbridge and Deputy Pat Morgan. Burbridge died from his injuries, Morgan is expected to make a full recovery.

Correa-Carmenaty was being brought back to the Pottawattamie County Jail from a court appearance Monday morning when he made his escape from the jail in a transport van. At that appearance, Correa-Carmenaty was sentenced to 45 years in prison on a 2016 case.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine expected Correa-Carmenaty to waive his extradition, and said if he did, Kleine would drop the five charges he faced in Omaha.

Correa-Carmenaty faces a laundry list of charges stemming from his escape including First Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder, three counts of Robbery, and Kidnapping.

A memorial service to honor Deputy Burbridge is scheduled for Monday, May 8th at 10:00 AM at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs. The public is welcome to attend the service.
