Bond Set For Man Accused Of Killing Sheriff's Deputy

Bond was set Wednesday morning for a man authorities say shot and killed a Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy.

A judge said due to the serious nature of the crime, bail is set at $10 million for 23 year old Wesley Correa-Carmenaty.

Correa-Carmenaty is the Pottawattamie County Jail inmate that escaped from custody Monday morning who is accused of shooting two Deputies, killing Deputy Mark Burbridge and wounding Deputy Pat Morgan. Deputy Morgan is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery.

During Correa-Carmenaty's violent escape he also wounded a man he attempted to carjack and kidnapped a woman before dropping her off in Omaha. He continued to use the woman's vehicle to evade police before being captured near I-480 and Cuming St.

Correa-Carmenaty faces five charges in Douglas County and about ten charges in Pottawattamie including First Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder, Escape From Custody and Kidnapping.

If Correa-Carmenaty waives extradition he will be taken back to Iowa for prosecution and Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said he would drop the charges from Omaha.

If he does not waive extradition the governor of Iowa will sign and send a Governor's Warrant to Gov. Pete Ricketts for him to sign, then Correa-Carmenaty will be taken back to Iowa on the Governor's Warrant.

A preliminary hearing has been set for June 5, where Correa-Carmenaty will have a court-appointed attorney represent him.

There will be separate hearing to determine if Correa-Carmenaty will waive his extradition.
