Fugitive Accused Of Shooting Deputies Charged In Omaha

A fugitive accused of killing Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Burbridge during a jail escape Monday is now facing charges in Omaha.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB that on Tuesday he filed a number of charges against 23 year old Wesley Correa-Carmenaty. "We're charging him today with kidnapping, use of a firearm, felon in possession, flight to avoid arrest and then being a fugitive from justice in Iowa."

Kleine says that although he has filed charges against Correa-Carmenaty, he'll most likely only be tried in Iowa. "They intend to file the murder charges there, so we'll defer to them. Once they've got everything together we'll probably end up dismissing our charges and sending him over to Iowa."

Murder charges carry a mandatory life sentence in Pottawattamie County.

Correa-Carmenaty will have an extradition hearing Wednesday morning, and Kleine says that hearing will give him the option to waive extradition, which would move the case to Pottawattamie County. "If he doesn't wave extradition, then they do their warrant, they certify it, they send it to their governor. Then their governor sends it to our governor and he's taken back on that governor's warrant."

The second deputy shot, Pat Morgan, is recovering from his injuries and is in fair condition.
