Pottawattamie Deputy Killed During Jail Break

A jail break and pursuit Monday morning leaves one person dead and two others injured. The Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department released more details Monday afternoon in the deadly incident that started just before 11:00.

Sheriff Jeff Denker says two Deputies, 43 year old Mark Burbridge and 59 year old Pat Morgan, were transporting two prisoners from the Pottawattamie County Courthouse back to the Pottawattamie County Jail after court appearances. Authorities say Correa-Carmenaty was returning to jail after being sentenced to 45 years in prison for attempted murder, voluntary manslaughter and robbery charges from 2016.

Denker says when the transport van arrived, 23 year old Wesley Williams Correa-Carmenaty assaulted the deputies, taking one of the their guns, shooting both officers. Correa-Carmenaty fled the jail in the transport van, driving through the closed garage door.

Once on the run he attempted to carjack 30 year old Jerry Brittain's Chevy S-10 pickup truck near 16th and Big Lake Road. Correa-Carmenaty shot Brittain, then fled again in the van. Brittain was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, a passenger in the truck was not injured.

Correa-Carmenaty abandoned the van a short while later near 25th and I, where he was successful in carjacking another person.

Authorities say 31 year old Amy Kanger was in the area of 25th and I, and after seeing the transport van up on the grass checked to see if anyone was injured. They say Correa-Carmenaty kidnapped Kanger at gunpoint, forcing her back into her 2015 Nissan Sentra.

Correa-Carmenaty fled over the river into Omaha where he dropped Kanger off around 11:15 at the R & L Liquor Store near 30th and Laurel, where she notified Omaha Police that she had been carjacked.

Omaha Police officers spotted the suspect on eastbound Ames at 31st Avenue and followed the suspect as he turned south onto 30th Street. They declared a pursuit in the area of 30th and Sprague while the suspect proceeded south on 30th, reaching speeds of 90 MPH at times.

Correa-Carmenaty then fled on westbound Cuming before making a U-turn at Saddle Creek and fleeing east on Cuming. Stop sticks were put out at 40th, 36th and 30th & Cuming, but the vehicle did not run over any of them. Correa-Carmenaty then attempted to turn onto I-480 South, but hit a brick wall on the entrance ramp.

He was taken into custody without incident on the ramp and taken to Central Station. Multiple law enforcement agencies were on the scene including Omaha Police K-9, Traffic and Gang units, Nebraska State Patrol, Douglas County Sheriff, U.S. Marshals, Council Bluffs Police and Pottawattamie County Sheriffs.

Correa-Carmenaty was booked into the Douglas County Jail for Kidnapping, Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Felony Operating a Vehicle to Avoid Arrest and Fugitive From Justice.

Iowa's charges are first Degree Murder, two counts of Attempted Murder and First Degree Kidnapping..

The two deputies shot, Burbridge and Morgan, were both transported to Omaha hospitals with serious injuries.

Deputy Burbridge, a twelve year veteran of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Department, died from his injuries.

Deputy Morgan, a ten year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, suffered a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen and is in stable condition. The investigation is ongoing.
