The Omaha Public Schools superintendent may not be retiring after all. The OPS board voted 7-2 Monday to enter contract negations with Mark Evans for the 2017—2018 school year.
Members were left with few choices after a nation-wide search ended when the district’s top three candidates withdrew from consideration. Soon after, the board began a search to hire a temporary superintendent.
But the newly formed OPS accountability committee voted Friday to recommend that none of the 12 applicants for the position be selected as finalists.
Evans was not in attendance for the board meeting due to a prior engagement. He announced last October that he would retire at the end of this school year to spend more time with family.
The next step for board members will be to begin contract negotiations with Evans. He would have to agree to the conditions and the board would have to vote again.
