At a Tuesday morning press conference it was announced that Facebook will be moving into the metro.
The social media giant said they have plans to build a data center on 146 acres of land on Highway 50, two miles north of Springfield.
The center will include four buildings, two on each side of Highway 50, that will be connected by a tunnel.
Facebook's Vice President of Infrastructure Tom Furlong says the company looks forward to playing a positive role in the community. "We're excited to be here. We look forward to being a part of the community and doing what we can do to help Papillion continue to thrive."
Governor Pete Ricketts says this is a great opportunity for Facebook and Nebraska. "In the past year, I had the chance to visit Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, California and meet with executives who are instrumental in building the company’s data center ecosystem. We were able to demonstrate that Nebraska can meet or exceed their expectations on every front. We are excited to welcome Facebook to the Good Life!"
The Papillion center is Facebook's ninth data center globally, and sixth facility in the U.S.
Facebook will join other other Sarpy County data centers including Fidelity Investments, Travelers Insurance, Cabela's and PayPal.
