Convicted killer Anthony Garcia appeared in court Thursday to learn what the next steps in his death penalty case would be.
Judge Randall appointed the Public Advocacy Commission to assist in Garcia's defense after a late night motion Wednesday by his attorneys for a continuance.
Meaning, that for now, the three-judge panel is on hold until Garcia speaks with his new defense team. The defense wants more time to evaluate his mental state.
Garcia has had three mental evaluations since being arrested, most recently just a few weeks ago after he refused to respond to questions posed by Judge Randall.
Garcia was wearing headphones during his appearance and has claimed that he can't hear anything. He also wore headphones during his trial and his defense team says he wasn't able to hear anything then either.
Garcia was convicted last year in the 2008 murders of eleven year old Thomas Hunter and the hunter family's housekeeper Shirlee Sherman, as well as the 2013 murders of Dr. Roger Brumback and his wife Mary.
All four murders were connected to the pathology department at Creighton University Medical Center, where Garcia was fired from in 2000.
It is unclear how long the delay will take, since the new defense team will need to review the entire case.
