The Lincoln Children's Zoo is looking to make some big changes in the next few years.
Zoo officials announced Wednesday that they have plans for the biggest expansion in the zoo's 52 year history.
The ten acre expansion includes four new exhibits that are slated to open in 2019.
Zoo President and CEO John Chapo says the expansion will create more interactivity for guests. "We are excited to add more firsthand experiences to our rich history of connecting children with animals and nature."
The new interactive exhibits will include a giraffe habitat that allows guests to hand feed the spotted long necks and a safari style tiger encounter that will give you a one of a kind photo op with the big cats.
The expansion also includes an indoor adventure area where children can climb and play with spider monkeys and a red panda habitat giving patrons an up close look at the endangered animals.
Chapo says all of the animals in the expansion are endangered and are in need of being saved from extinction. "Lincoln Children's Zoo is committed to saving species as well as serving children and our community."
The current zoo won't be affected by the construction and will operate as normal.
Once the expansion is complete in 2019 the zoo will begin year-round operation.
