Two Men Rescued From Lake Cunningham

There were some tense moments on Lake Cunningham Thursday afternoon after a canoe capsized, sending two men into the chilly water.

Neither of them were wearing life jackets.  They were holding on to the side of the overturned canoe as rescuers made their way out to them.

With the boat ramp on the other side of the lake, Battalion Fire Chief Shane McClanahan says they couldn't get a rescue boat out in time.  They caught a break when a citizen who was at the lake let firefighters use his boat.   High winds and choppy waters may have made the rescue more difficult.

The men were brought to shore and immediately wrapped with blankets in an effort to dry them off and ensure they were warm enough.

Both were taken by ambulance to a local hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia. It's not known how long they were in the water.
