Man Freed After Being Trapped For Hours

After almost seven hours, a 23 year old utility worker was rescued Tuesday afternoon from a trench that had collapsed around him.

The eight foot deep trench collapsed around 9:45 Tuesday morning trapping Drew Johnson's legs under thousands of pounds of dirt.

Along with Omaha Firefighters, Police and EMTs, MUD crews were also called in to help move the soil.

MUD crews brought in a large compressor to free compacted soil from around Johnson's right foot.

Johnson had been working on a sewer main when the dirt caved in on him and he was unable to free himself from the hole.

Authorities were initially concerned about the risk of hypothermia, but Johnson told rescue workers he was not cold.

Crews stayed in communication with Johnson throughout the ordeal. He remained alert and talking while rescuers provided him with warm liquids and oxygen.

Johnson was transported to the hospital after he was freed, but it is unclear what injuries he may have sustained during the incident.
