Man Charged In Deadly Crash Apologizes To Family

The driver who caused a crash last summer that killed a 16 year-old Benson High School student was sent to prison on Wednesday.

Tyvinn Smith was drunk and high on cocaine last June when his speeding vehicle slammed into the back of a car driven by Janis Brown on Sorensen Parkway near Wenninghoff Road.

Brown was killed.  Her sister and brother were in the car and escaped serious injury.  Smith was sentenced to 22-25 years in prison and will be eligible for parole in 11 years.

Before learning his fate, Smith apologized to Janis Brown's family.  He said: "I would never hurt your baby. I'm sorry for that... I can't live with myself for it."

After the sentencing, Janis Brown's mother, Carlotta Smith, told WOWT 6 News she doubted his Tyvinn Smith's sincerity.  "I still don't feel any remorse whatsoever. I don't know if he'll ever have any. I'm glad they did get him off the streets because I would hate for another mother to be in my shoes.  No amount of time will bring my daughter back."
