A fire early Wednesday afternoon forced a woman to act quickly to get herself and two dogs out of her home as the flames licked the back of her house.
Bennington Fire Chief Brent Jones says the fire started just before noon and when they got to the scene they saw heavy smoke and flames. "We contained all the fire to the exterior of the structure. A little bit of smoke damage on the inside. It appears to have spread from the hot tub."
Jones says thankfully their crews and crews from the Omaha Fire Department were able to respond quickly, so the damage was much less than what it could have been. "Couple of windows and some siding. No fire damage to the inside of the structure."
If the windows can be boarded up Wednesday, Jones says he doesn't expect the homeowners to be displaced because of the fire.
The damage is estimated to be about $20,000.
