License Plate Bill Advanced By Nebraska Senators

Pro-life supporters in Nebraska may be getting the chance to display their opposition to abortion on their license plates.

Nebraska Senators voted 37-7 Tuesday to advance a bill that would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to design a "Choose Life" license plate.

The bill would still require two more votes to pass.

Opponents of the bill say political statements should not be allowed on state issued license plates and instead should offer messages like "Rape Is No Laughing Matter" or "Stop Child Abuse."

The bill's sponsor, Sen. Dan Watermeier of Syracuse, says the plates would show support for all children.

The plates would cost $5 more than the normal plates, with the extra money going to funding for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
