Penguin Chicks Make First Public Appearance

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo will be showing off two new additions to the aquarium Thursday morning.

Two Rockhopper penguin chicks will be making their big debut in the Arctic penguin display.

They were hatched on December 11th and 13th, 2016 and are two of 31 Rockhoppers that have hatched in Omaha since 1998.

The species of penguin is considered vulnerable due to a loss of habitat and oil spills.

The chicks will spend a few weeks in a playpen in the exhibit while they get used to the other penguins and their new home. Being in the pen also gives the chicks a chance to grow their waterproof feathers so they can splash around with the other birds.

While it is not know what gender the penguins are yet, zoo officials are asking for visitors to submit names for the chicks.

Both male and female names can be submitted to the official entry box in front of the penguin display in the Scott Aquarium until February 23rd.

Zookeepers will choose two names, and the visitors who submit the winning names will get a zoo gift basket.
