Bomb Squad Called To Islamic Center Of Omaha

There were some anxious moments Tuesday morning at Omaha's Islamic Center after two suspicious suitcases were found just inside the front door.

A witness told police he saw, what he thought, was a suspicious person leaving the center around 9:30.

The witness then went into the building and saw the two pieces of luggage.

That prompted the bomb squad to come out to investigate the bags.

Omaha Police Captain Marcia West says they eventually determined the luggage belonged to a returning member. "He just came back from a long trip and he didn't want to carry his luggage around, and so he had left it inside the doors. And he didn't think anything about it at the time."

The man returned as the bomb squad was checking the luggage.

Spokesman for the Islamic Center of Omaha Saleh Qulagi says, "What's going on right now and the state of affairs, especially in terms of immigration, all that kind of stuff. So we just want to be very cautious, we have to take precautionary steps for the safety of the community."

The center has been the targets of vandalism and threats in the past.
