Apartment Fire Leaves 19 People Without A Home

An unattended pot of grease left on the stove is being blamed for a fire that damaged several units at the Legacy Crossing apartments near 108th and Fort Wednesday afternoon.

There was thick, black smoke coming from the building when firefighters arrived.  Battalion Chief Shane McClanahan says flames heavily damaged one unit and 12 others were heavily damaged by smoke. An additional 12 units sustained minor smoke damage.

McClanahan says firefighters and some of the residents rescued a number of pets from the burning building and they are expected to be o.k. The Red Cross is assisting the residents make other living arrangements.
