For almost 100 years the Dundee Theater has entertained movie goers, but for the last few years it has sat empty. No popcorn, no raucous patrons, no stars gracing the silver screen.
In 2013 the theater shut its doors for renovations, but still it sits, waiting for people to fill its auditorium.
In 2016 it was announced that the Sherwood Foundation had bought the theater and neighboring Old Dundee Bar & Grill and donated it to Film Streams.
Now renovations are in full swing at the Art Deco theater, and Newradio 1110 KFAB got to take a peek inside.
Film Streams Deputy Director Casey Logan says they will mix the old with the new. "Make it feel like, you know, you're walking back into the best version of the theater that you remember. While at the same time, renovating in a way that really makes it a first rate, 21st century movie theater experience."
Some of those renovations include updating the plush blue seats that everyone remembers and a digital projector. But not to forget times of past, they theater will also have the ability to show 35 millimeter reel-to-reel films.
Renovations also include the new lobby which will be situated where The Old Dundee Bar & Grill called home.
That space will include a cafe, lounge area and "pocket park".
Logan says the pocket park will be a small green patio area where patrons and neighbors alike can spend a leisurely afternoon. "We really see it a a spot for the neighborhood and the community."
Logan says they hope to have renovations done by the end of the year.
