Dog Saved From Burning Home On Road To Recovery

One Omaha dog is lucky to be alive after being rescued by Omaha firefighters from a burning home Wednesday morning.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered smoke and flames and had no idea the robust black lab, Jack, was trapped inside. After they learned no one was in the house, they turned their attention to Jack and acted quickly to get to the dog.

Mark Langan with the Nebraska Humane Society says after a rocky day on Wednesday, Jack is now doing great. "Well Jack had a great night at the vet clinic. He's recovering well and is expected to have a full recovery. So we're thrilled that that's happening."

Firefighters gave Jack oxygen at the scene until Humane Society staff could take the pup for treatment. "Jack suffered some smoke inhalation and the fire department just did a fantastic job of getting some oxygen into him right away. We rushed him to the vet clinic, the vet did a good job. So great job everybody involved, especially the fire department."

Langan says it isn't uncommon that they see firefighters helping animals from these kinds of situations. "This isn't the only situation the fire department's helped animals out on. So they're great to work with."

Although the flames heavily damaged the home, Langan says there is a little joy in knowing Jack will be okay. "I'm sure the homeowners are, you know, traumatized by the house fire, but still they're probably overjoyed that they're getting their dog back. So we're really happy for them."
