When Omaha firefighters arrived at a home near 63rd and Curtis around 11:00 Wednesday morning there was heavy smoke coming from it.
They encountered flames on the first floor and quickly determined there was no one home at the time.
Battalion Chief Rob McEvoy tells NewsRadio 1110 KFAB they then turned their attention to the family's black lab that was inside the burning house."We provided oxygen to the dog, which was conscious but not alert."
Firefighters then carried the dog to a Nebraska Humane Society vehicle.
Vets at the shelter are treating the animal. As for the fire, McEvoy says most of the fire damage was on the first floor, but the rest of the house sustained smoke damage.
The family will have to find another place to live until repairs can be made.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
