This is Not an Omaha Police Officer

This has been circulating on social media today following the shooting of a man in the Old Market, allegedly by bar owner Jake Gardner.

[Jake has been vilified as racist all over social media, as well. Full disclosure: I don't know Jake, but I have a number of friends who do and they're saying he's not the murderous racist he's being made to look like. I also see at least one friend on Facebook backing the assertion that he's a racist. Again: I don't know Jake. Chief Schmaderer just said at this afternoon's news conference that the shooter is still in custody, but didn't ID anyone.]

Regarding the picture above, this was just released by the NE Dept. of Corrections:

A photo of an individual wearing a Douglas County Department of Corrections uniform has been circulating on social media along with abhorrent comments allegedly from this individual. The individual pictured was misidentified as an Omaha Police officer.

The individual pictured is a former Douglas County Department of Corrections Officer who worked at Corrections for less than three months in 2019. He is no longer employed by Douglas County.

We have no way of determining whether this social media post is authentic or fabricated. However, the comments posted are hateful and are not in any way consistent with the values of the Douglas County Department of Corrections. The Douglas County Department of Corrections encourages social change and justice, while also hoping for a peaceful resolution to the unrest our community is currently experiencing.

--Mike Myers, director of Douglas County Department of Corrections
