KENTUCKY GOVERNOR APOLOGIZES TO TUPAC SHAKUR FOR UNEMPLOYMENT MIX-UP
This had to be awkward. Kentucky governor Andy Beshear held a news conference on Monday night and said that “bad apples” have been using fake names to file for unemployment during the pandemic. He said, “We had somebody apply for unemployment for Tupac Shakur here in Kentucky. And that person may have thought they were being funny, they probably did. Except for the fact that because of them, we had to go through so many other claims.”
But in reality the claim wasn’t a prank that referenced the rapper who died in 1996, but an actual claim from a Lexington resident legally named Tupac Malik Shakur.
The 46-year-old said he filed for unemployment on March 13th and was shocked to hear the governor announce why his benefits haven’t been issued yet. Shakur told a local paper that the incident embarrassed him, and the paper passed Sharkur’s contact information on to Beshear’s office on Monday night. Shakur confirmed he received a phone call from the governor on yesterday morning to apologize for the confusion. Officials say the state is now working to resolve Shakur’s claim.
