(Lincoln, NE) -- The man found guilty in the 2020 shooting death of a Lincoln Police officer is sentenced to prison.
On Wednesday, a Lancaster County judge sentenced Felipe Vazquez to 71 years to life in prison. Vazquez was given time served, meaning he will be required to serve at least 69 more years for the death of Luis "Mario" Herrera. During his sentencing, Vazquez spoke and for the first time apologized to Herrera’s family.
Before hissuing the sentence, Judge Andrew Jacobsen called Vazquez a danger to the public and said that he showed no remorse for his actions. “During the interrogation, just hours after having shot Investigator Herrera, the defendant can be seen spitting on the floor, singing rap songs and flashing gang signs to a camera that he is obviously aware of. This is an indication to me that the defendant harbored little to no remorse for his actions.”
Vazquez shot Herrera on Aug. 26, 2020 while police were attempting to serve an arrest warrant at a Lincoln home. Herrera died from his injuries 12 days after being shot.
