Governor Ricketts calls on Congressman Jeff Fortenberry to resign

(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts calls on Congressman Jeff Fortenberry to resign after a jury found him guilty of lying to the FBI about illegal campaign contributions.

On Friday, Ricketts released a statement saying, "The people of Nebraska’s First Congressional District deserve active, certain representation. I hope Jeff Fortenberry will do the right thing and resign so his constituents have that certainty while he focuses on his family and other affairs."

On Thursday, a federal jury in Los Angeles found Fortenberry guilty on charges of scheming to falsify or conceal material facts and making a false statement to a government agency. Fortenberry was accused of accepting $30,000 in campaign donations from a foreign national during his 2016 re-election campaign.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi also called on the nine-term Congressman to resign.

Fortenberry has been Nebraska's First District Congressman since 2005.
