I'm not 100% sure what is exactly going on in this scam, but it's important to know:
NEVER send anybody gift cards, money, checks, info, your drivers license picture, or social security number.
EVEN IF IT'S A "FRIEND" on Facebook. If you have a friend contact you through messenger on Facebook (or ANY social media) for help or a great deal you should get in on... CALL THEM! It's very easy for scammers to pretend it's one of your contacts or friends!
