(Lincoln, NE) -- A Lincoln man is left brain-dead after crashing his vehicle during a pursuit with the Nebraska State Patrol.
The NSP says just before 1:00 Saturday morning, a trooper attempted to stop a Mercedes sedan for driving with no license plates near 27th and Vine streets in Lincoln. Investigators say the driver, 20 year old Ahmed Gregory, fled northbound on 27th street, with the trooper in pursuit behind him.
The state patrol says the vehicle fled eastbound on Fair Street, turning northbound on 32nd street, before stopping near 32nd and Leighton. Investigators say as the trooper attempted to make contact with Gregory, he accelerated and fled again. The NSP says the Mercedes then turned southbound onto 31st street and struck a parked car. No others were involved in the crash and the entire pursuit lasted less than two minutes.
Investigators say Gregory was not wearing a seat belt and sustained life-threatening injuries in the crash. He was transported to Bryan Medical Center West Campus. On Sunday doctors informed the Lincoln Police Department, which is investigating the crash, that Gregory had no brain activity. LPD says although Gregory has been declared brain-dead, "His body remains in a medically-preserved state to give his family a chance to make difficult decisions about his remains. This is a difficult time for anyone who knew Mr. Gregory. We extend our thoughts to his family and ask the public to respect their privacy as they grieve."
Per Nebraska State Statute, the case will be reviewed by a Grand Jury.
